Leon Stephan Ostrodka (May 28, 1922 - May 8, 2017)

Leon Stephan Ostrodka, 94, of Sandoval, IL, died Monday, May 8, 2017, at the Carlyle Healthcare Center in Carlyle.

He was born on May 28, 1922, in Sandoval, IL, son of Fred and Agnes Ostrodka (nee Brdenk). He married Laurel "Maxine" Harris on August 7, 1946 in Knoxville, TN.

Leon was preceded in death by his wife Maxine, whom he met while they both were working at Oak Ridge, TN. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, his brother John Ostrodka, his half-brother Joseph Porzukowiak, and his half-sisters (also Porzukowiak) Julia Smith, Veronica Bullock and Frances Forrest.

He is survived by his sons David Leon Ostrodka and Stephen Lee Ostrodka, and wife Ruth. As a lifelong learner who enjoyed reading nonfiction books and newspapers, he inspired his three grandchildren Curtis (Andrea), Leanne and Lenna Ostrodka and his two great-grandchildren Camden Leon and Josephine India Ostrodka. He is also survived by some nieces and nephews.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was assigned to the Special Engineer Detachment and selected for continuing his education at Michigan State College and Penn State College, where he completed courses in the electrical engineering program. In Oak Ridge he was part of a crew in charge of power supplies for the electromagnetic separation of atomic material for use in the Manhattan Project to produce the atomic bomb.

After the war, he worked as an electrical engineer at the Emerson Electric Co. in St. Louis, MO, for 38 years.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend visiting hours held Saturday, May 13, 2017 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Day Macz Funeral Home in Sandoval. Private burial will follow at later date at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family ask in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Leon’s’ memory may be made to the American Heart Association.
